Nestled within the rugged slopes of Rooi Els in South Africa’s Western Cape, Hytte Riverview by KLG Architects offers a striking response to its dramatic natural setting. Positioned where the Rooi Els River meets the expanse of False Bay, the home is both a shelter from the elements and a vantage point for endless views—a balance of rugged refuge and serene outlook.

At just 110 square metres, the compact retreat is carefully integrated into the rocky terrain, its bold forms and textured walls echoing the geological drama of its site. KLG Architects approached the project with a deep sensitivity to landscape and climate, crafting a home that feels inseparable from the place it inhabits.

Grounded in Place
The site’s natural conditions—sloping topography, strong coastal winds, and ever-changing light—were central to the design process. Rather than imposing a foreign structure onto the land, the architects shaped thick, monolithic walls to anchor the house into the hillside. These walls provide thermal mass and weather protection, while also giving the residence a sense of permanence and rootedness.

The rough plaster finish of the walls was deliberately chosen to mimic nearby rocky outcrops, visually merging the home with its surroundings. This textural quality enhances the tactile experience of the building, inviting touch and creating subtle plays of shadow as the sun shifts throughout the day.
A Dialogue Between Shelter and View
The architecture negotiates a delicate balance between enclosure and openness. While the thick walls provide intimacy and protection, expanses of floor-to-ceiling glazing open the home to the surrounding landscape. The result is a spatial dialogue: rooms that feel cocooned and secure while still offering dramatic, uninterrupted vistas of the estuary, False Bay, and the mountains beyond.
According to KLG Architects, this balance captures “the essence of refuge and prospect.” From certain vantage points, the rugged exterior walls frame the horizon like a carefully composed landscape painting. Elsewhere, the glazing dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior, creating a seamless connection to the natural world.

Despite its modest size, Hytte Riverview is highly functional and carefully planned. The layout is organized to maximize efficiency, offering open living spaces that flow into each other while maintaining moments of privacy.
The living area sits at the heart of the home, where large glass doors open onto a terrace overlooking the estuary. This connection to the outdoors extends the living space and invites natural light deep into the interior. The bedrooms are tucked into quieter corners, buffered by thick walls that enhance their sense of retreat and intimacy.
Natural materials—wood, stone, and textured plaster—create a cohesive palette that reflects the surrounding landscape. The muted tones and tactile surfaces foster a calm, meditative atmosphere, emphasizing the home’s role as a sanctuary.

Resilient Design for Coastal Conditions
Located in a region known for its harsh coastal weather, the home was designed to withstand strong winds, salt-laden air, and intense sunlight. Deep overhangs and carefully positioned openings offer passive environmental control, reducing heat gain and providing shade. The robust plastered walls not only enhance thermal performance but also age gracefully, weathering naturally over time like the rocks that inspired them.
Sustainability was integral to the design approach. By minimizing the building’s footprint and using durable, locally appropriate materials, KLG Architects ensured the home would have a long lifespan with minimal environmental impact.
