In the heart of Dubai’s Al Wasl neighborhood, Casa Amal emerges as a refined architectural sanctuary that merges cultural memory with contemporary elegance. Designed by the Melbourne-based studio The Stella Collective, the residence explores the intersection of Arabian heritage, modernist design language and the concept of slow luxury, resulting in a home that feels both timeless and deeply rooted in place.

From the outside, Casa Amal presents a quietly monumental façade defined by sandy tones and rhythmic perforations. Custom clay breeze blocks form a contemporary interpretation of the traditional mashrabiya, the intricate lattice screens historically used in Middle Eastern architecture. These elements perform both aesthetic and environmental roles, filtering sunlight, promoting airflow and projecting shifting patterns of light and shadow across the interiors throughout the day.

While the architecture adopts a largely linear framework, gentle curves soften the structure. Sweeping walls and five-metre-high arches introduce a sense of drama while referencing Moorish design traditions. The exterior palette combines rendered surfaces with Italian travertine, creating a monolithic expression that subtly changes tone as daylight moves across it. Carefully placed greenery further enriches the composition, transforming the house into an immersive oasis within the dense urban context.

Inside, restraint defines the spatial experience. Rather than relying on overt decoration, the design prioritises proportion, texture and light. Floors clad in sand-toned travertine echo the surrounding desert landscape, while olive-green mosaic tiles introduce depth in bathrooms and feature areas. The overall palette draws inspiration from nature - warm, grounded and quietly luxurious - allowing sunlight to become the home’s most dynamic material.

At the centre of the house lies a summer courtyard anchored by a swimming pool, establishing a strong indoor - outdoor relationship that defines the project’s spatial organisation. Rooms open visually toward this garden oasis through perforated screens or steel-framed glass doors, ensuring that no space feels completely detached from the surrounding landscape. This central void functions not only as a cooling device but also as the emotional heart of the residence.

The result is a dwelling that balances tradition and innovation with remarkable clarity. Casa Amal does not simply replicate historical motifs; instead, it reinterprets them through contemporary craftsmanship and materials. In doing so, The Stella Collective demonstrates how architecture can respond to context while maintaining a modern identity, creating a home where light, texture and heritage quietly converge.
