A modern arched entrance revives the 100-year-old preserved heritage house on Hàng Da Street

Nestled on historic Hàng Da Street in Hoàn Kiếm, Cultra Taproom by Idee Architects breathes new life into a colonial-era townhouse. Rather than erase its past, the designers embraced its age — transforming peeling plaster and narrow alleys into a dynamic social space. With just 100 m² to work with, Idee Architects crafted a multi-functional venue that balances local memory, architectural restoration, and the growing craft-beer and kombucha scene.

The building itself carries more than a century of history. During the French colonial period, it was built in classic style, and over time, it endured modifications and decay. A narrow 60 cm alley splits the ground floor, a physical constraint that could easily have limited the design. Instead, the architects turned it into an asset: this alley now frames a display area for Cultra’s signature kombucha, creating a charming moment of discovery and intimacy in the heart of the city.

Restoration and adaptation form the core of the strategy. At the upper levels, the façade was carefully repaired to preserve original architectural details like the balcony and masonry patterns. At the same time, new design interventions were introduced with restraint. Idee Architects maintained the soul of the building, adding glass and steel elements only where they would gracefully support the flow of light and movement.

Inside, the layout unfolds organically. The ground floor houses communal seating, a bar, a kombucha display, and café functions. Idee Architects arranged furniture and counters to encourage lingering — to invite conversation, sampling, and social ritual. The vertical circulation is subtly reinterpreted, with a staircase that links the narrow paths of the building and serves as a light well, drawing natural illumination into the heart of the space.

Upstairs, a rooftop terrace crowns the transformed structure. The original roof tiles — restored and carefully matched — recall the building’s heritage while offering a relaxed vantage point. From above, visitors sense the pulse of the Old Quarter. The terrace invites both day-time lounging and evening gathering. Soft lighting and thoughtful material details help render the space inviting without overwhelming the historic fabric beneath.

Materiality plays a decisive role. Idee Architects chose textures that echo the memory of the building: exposed brick, warm timber, and aged plaster. These materials anchor the design in its heritage while also supporting a modern hospitality program. Wall finishes were refined but not erased; original details were preserved, and new surfaces were introduced with sensitivity and craft.

Lighting strategy reinforces the atmosphere of discovery. Focused lights accentuate architectural features while ambient glow softens circulation areas. In the alley, display lighting highlights kombucha bottles and creates a cozy gallery feel. Up on the terrace, soft illumination spreads warmth across the rooftop, inviting people to linger even after sunset.

Cultra’s programming reflects a dual identity. During the day, it functions like a café, serving tea, coffee, and kombucha. At night, it welcomes a different energy: the bar comes alive with cocktails, conversations, and gentle music. This versatility makes the taproom not just a destination but a daily ritual — a place to meet, reflect, and celebrate.

The project demonstrates Idee Architects’ commitment to adaptive reuse. Rather than demolishing or replicating, they sought to revive. The scale is modest, but the ambition is high: to transform a small but storied building into a catalyst for community and culture. Cultra Taproom now stands as a bridge between Hanoi’s past and its present, where historic grace supports contemporary energy.
