Designed by DJX Design, the Zhonghong Wyndham Grand Hotel reimagines contemporary luxury not as spectacle, but as a deeply immersive, sensory experience. Rather than conforming to the expectations of a five-star hotel as a display of opulence, the project explores a more introspective question: what should luxury feel like in the modern city?
At its core, the hotel is conceived as a spatial retreat - an inward-looking sanctuary where architecture mediates between the body, perception, and time. This approach aligns with DJX Design’s broader philosophy of crafting environments that heighten awareness rather than overwhelm it, transforming hospitality into a form of experiential choreography.

A Vertical Landscape of Experience
The hotel unfolds as a carefully layered vertical environment, where circulation becomes narrative. Programs, ranging from accommodation and dining to wellness and social spaces, are interwoven into a continuous spatial sequence that privileges depth over efficiency. This layered organization creates a rhythm of compression and release, guiding guests through moments of transition that feel both intuitive and theatrical.
Rather than maximizing density, the design prioritizes spatial generosity and prolonged occupation. Guest rooms are conceived as private sanctuaries, extending beyond conventional hotel typologies to accommodate ritual, rest, and reflection - an approach increasingly central to redefining luxury hospitality.

Light as Architecture
Light is not treated as an afterthought but as a primary building material. From the moment of arrival, illumination emerges gradually from shadow, carving out volumes and revealing layers of texture. This controlled transition from darkness to light establishes a perceptual threshold - an intentional detachment from the external city.
Throughout the interiors, light interacts with surfaces - stone, metal, wood veneer, and textiles - transforming them into active participants in the spatial experience. Reflections, diffusion, and contrast generate a constantly shifting atmosphere, where the perception of scale and depth evolves over time.

“Grand from Afar, Refined Up Close”
A defining principle of the project lies in the balance between monumentality and intimacy. From a distance, spaces read as bold, sculptural gestures - grand volumes that evoke awe. Yet upon closer engagement, these same spaces reveal meticulous detailing, where material junctions and tactile qualities are finely calibrated.
This duality creates a layered experience: architecture that first impresses, then rewards. It also resists the superficial language of luxury, replacing visual excess with sensory richness - acoustics, tactility, and even the perception of silence become essential design tools.
Material as Atmosphere
Materiality in the Zhonghong Wyndham Grand Hotel is less about display and more about orchestration. Stone grounds the spaces with a sense of permanence, while metal introduces precision and reflection. Wood veneer softens the environment, and textiles absorb sound, contributing to an enveloping calm.
Crucially, these materials are not used to signify status but to construct atmosphere. Their arrangement - how they catch light, how they feel to the touch, how they shape sound - defines the emotional register of each space.

A New Model of Urban Retreat
In a dense urban context, the project proposes an alternative model for hospitality: the hotel not as a transient stop, but as a destination for restoration. This philosophy reflects a broader shift in contemporary hospitality design, where experiential depth outweighs visual spectacle. At the Zhonghong Wyndham Grand Hotel, architecture becomes a medium for recalibration, slowing perception, heightening awareness, and reconnecting the individual with both space and self.
