In the heart of Bangkok’s bustling Silom district, perched 42 floors above the city’s pulse, lies The Norm - a rooftop bar that rejects the usual focus on skyline spectacle in favor of human-centred experience. Here, furniture isn’t an afterthought: it is the foundation on which atmosphere, movement and social life are built.

Most rooftop venues in Bangkok trade on views and breezes, but The Norm’s founding vision flips this logic. Owner Turk Sitthan arrived with a clear mandate: “start with the chair, and let everything else follow.” For him, the moments that matter in hospitality are the ones people spend seated - lingering, talking, sharing stories over drinks. That simple belief became the guiding principle for designer and brand partner Fritz Hansen and the architectural team at EKAR Architects.

Seating becomes a spatial device, structuring the room without partitions

At the core of the concept are iconic pieces by legendary designers such as Arne Jacobsen, whose Swan and Egg chairs were originally conceived for public spaces where people might settle into interaction. Reicherl, CEO of Fritz Hansen Asia, explains that these silhouettes offer privacy without isolation, a sense of comfort without surrendering to casualness. In a bar setting, they have the power to slow time, encouraging guests to stay longer, rather than drift through.

The 1,200-square-metre space unfolds as a series of environments, each carefully calibrated to invite different kinds of social behavior. Warm timber ceilings, inspired by traditional craft techniques, draw the eye upward while anchoring the interior with a tactile sense of warmth. Intimate lounge nooks furnished with Poul Kjærholm sofas provide more secluded havens, while the bar’s custom Series 7 stools create a natural gathering point for conversation.

Rather than signage or barriers, The Norm relies on its spatial choreography to guide guests. High-backed chairs quietly carve out pockets of privacy; open seating arrangements signal zones for more animated socializing; sheltered alcoves offer respite from the open terrace beyond. It’s a thoughtful dance of compression and release - a design ethos reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright’s principles - that leads visitors from calm interior to the dramatic Bangkok skyline.

The choice of materials reinforces The Norm’s intention to be a place people want to inhabit, not just visit. Leather tones were chosen to age gracefully and harmonize with rich wooden surfaces - a restrained palette that elevates rather than competes with the furniture’s sculptural forms. This creates a space that feels both timeless and rooted, lending an enduring quality rare in a city known for rapid trend cycles.
