The Case for Shrinking Down
There is a persistent discomfort in architectural discourse around the word "model." It conjures images of foam-core student exercises or developer sales tools, artifacts that simplify rather than clarify. But at Jia Curated 2026, a gathering that unfolds this month along Pengembak Beach in Sanur, Bali, the maquette is being rehabilitated as a device of honesty. The fair's Architecture at Scale exhibition, curated by Charmaine Chan, assembles twenty-five models from practices spanning Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan, united by a single premise: that biophilic design - the integration of living systems into built form - cannot hide behind renderings or rhetoric. At one-fiftieth or one-hundredth scale, a building's ecological commitments become legible in ways the full-size structure often obscures.
Jia Curated itself is an anomaly in the design-fair landscape. Founded in 2022 by Budiman Ong, Rudi Winata, and Yang Yang Hartono, it has anchored itself in the Indonesian principle of gotong royong, a term for collective labor that historically brought entire villages together during planting and harvest. For a fair claiming communal effort as its organizing logic, the choice of venue this year is deliberate: fifteen thousand square meters of coastline threaded with mangroves and pine, a site that foregrounds the entanglement of human activity and ecological infrastructure. The theme, Nature Weave, does not ask architects to decorate with greenery. It asks them to show how buildings can be woven into living systems - and how those systems, in turn, shape spatial form.
What a Maquette Cannot Lie About
Chan, who edits design and culture coverage at the South China Morning Post, has spent the better part of two decades watching architects describe their projects in terms of sustainability, resilience, and environmental sensitivity. She has also watched many of those claims dissolve under scrutiny. Her curatorial thesis for Architecture at Scale is straightforward: a model, if built with fidelity to tectonic and environmental logic, will expose whether a building's relationship to nature is structural or cosmetic. "You can't really see a building when you're standing inside or beside it," she notes. "A model cannot lie in the same way. If a building needs to breathe through a certain void, or a roof needs to shed water towards a specific point, the model must show how."
The exhibition includes work from Kengo Kuma + Associates, whose practice has long explored the porosity of boundaries between interior and exterior; andramatin, the Jakarta-based studio known for its deft handling of tropical light and ventilation; Elora Hardy's IBUKU Studio, which has spent the last decade refining bamboo as a primary structural material; and Cheng Tsung Feng, whose Taiwanese projects often embed courtyards and light wells as thermal regulators. Each practice has submitted a maquette that articulates not just form, but the environmental logic that generated it.
A Squirrel, a Mango Seed, and Spatial Intention
Chan's personal touchstone for the exhibition is Elok House, a 2007 project by Chang Architects in Singapore. The site is a narrow terrace plot just off Orchard Road, hemmed in by neighboring structures and zoning constraints. The design response was to treat the section as a vertical landscape: light wells run down both flanks, a retaining wall doubles as a waterfall, and trees grow through apertures cut into floor slabs. The house is, in effect, a scaffolding for ecological processes.
Chan recounts a detail that did not appear in any publication: a squirrel once wandered in carrying a mango seed, which lodged in a wall crevice and eventually sprouted. The sapling grew for several seasons before being gently removed. "A model may struggle to capture that particular detail," she says, "but its spatial logic shows you exactly how that could happen." The apertures, the orientation of the light wells, the placement of soil pockets - all of it is legible in the maquette in a way that photographs or plan drawings rarely convey. The building was designed not to resist ecological intrusion, but to accommodate it.
This is the distinction Chan wants Architecture at Scale to make visible. Biophilia, as a term, has been diluted by marketing. It appears in brochures for office towers with potted ferns and residential towers with rooftop gardens. But the projects in this exhibition treat living systems as co-authors of spatial form. At IBUKU Studio, bamboo's growth cycles and tensile properties dictate structural spans and joint detailing. At andramatin, monsoon rains and prevailing winds shape roof pitches and the placement of operable screens. At Kengo Kuma + Associates, the interplay of shadow, humidity, and material weathering becomes a compositional tool.
The Fair, the Region, and the Argument
Jia Curated has positioned itself as a counterpoint to the larger design fairs that circulate through Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bangkok - events where Indonesian and Southeast Asian practices are often categorized under "craft" or "vernacular," terms that inadvertently suggest a distance from contemporary architectural discourse. The fair's programming, which includes talks, installations, and a curated selection of furniture and objects, is calibrated to assert regional design not as a genre but as a set of practices with distinct formal and ecological commitments.
Architecture at Scale extends that argument without needing to state it explicitly. The twenty-five maquettes on view are not accompanied by wall text explaining their environmental credentials or listing certifications. Instead, they are presented as spatial propositions, each legible at a scale that allows the eye to trace the movement of air, water, and light through the building. The result is a quiet but persuasive case: that biophilic design is not a matter of adding plants to elevations, but of understanding how buildings can participate in ecological cycles without surrendering architectural intention.
At a moment when much of the discourse around sustainability in architecture has calcified into checklists and point systems, Architecture at Scale offers a different kind of evidence. The maquettes do not argue through metrics or certifications. They argue through form, showing how a void can channel cross-ventilation, how a roof can harvest and redistribute rainwater, how a courtyard can modulate thermal mass. These are not abstractions. They are design decisions with spatial consequences, and the model makes those consequences visible all at once.
What Happens When You See the Whole System
We have tracked, over the past several years, a growing impatience with architectural imagery that prioritizes the photogenic over the performative. Renderings show buildings in perfect light, devoid of weather or wear. Photographs freeze moments that may occur only once a year, under ideal conditions. Models, by contrast, are forensic. They show the building as a system, with all its dependencies and adjacencies exposed.
This is particularly important for projects that claim ecological integration. A green wall looks impressive in an elevation drawing, but a model will reveal whether it has access to irrigation, drainage, and sufficient light - or whether it is, in fact, a decorative appliance bolted onto a façade. A courtyard may appear generous in plan, but a model will show whether it actually connects to operable windows, whether it can induce stack-effect ventilation, whether it serves as a thermal buffer or simply as a void.
The practices represented in Architecture at Scale have, for the most part, spent years refining these relationships. Kengo Kuma + Associates has explored the thermal and acoustic properties of louvered screens in timber, stone, and composite materials. Andramatin has developed a formal vocabulary around the interplay of solid and void in tropical climates, where shade and airflow are as critical as enclosure. IBUKU Studio has treated bamboo not as a material to be applied, but as a structural system with its own logic, one that requires close collaboration with local growers and fabricators. Cheng Tsung Feng has embedded water features and planted courtyards into residential typologies as strategies for passive cooling, not as amenities.
The Argument Without Rhetoric
For a fair that has staked its identity on communal effort and regional specificity, Architecture at Scale makes its case without needing to announce it. The maquettes are the argument. They show, with precision, how buildings can be designed to breathe, to shed water, to host other species, to participate in cycles of growth and decay. They also show, by omission, when those ambitions are merely cosmetic.
Jia Curated runs from August 13 to 17, and Architecture at Scale occupies a pavilion near the mangrove edge of the site. The setting is appropriate. Mangroves are themselves a study in structural biophilia, their root systems stabilizing coastlines while providing habitat for dozens of species. The analogy is not lost on Chan, who has organized the exhibition to encourage slow, careful looking. There are no labels identifying which projects are "sustainable" or which have won awards. There are only the models, each one a distillation of spatial and ecological logic, waiting to be read.
